Do I need an appointment to renew my license in KY? ›

Appointments are highly suggested, as limited space for walk-ins differs from site to site.

Online renewal is only available for select license or ID Card renewals. License or ID card replacements (lost/stolen) cannot be accepted online at this time. Applicant must use a valid Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express (debit or credit cards can be used).

Kentucky Driver's License Renewal Fees

Most can now renew their driver's licenses, as well as motorcycle licenses, fully online at dlrenewal.ky.gov. You can knock out the renewal process online as early as six months before your license's expiration or for up to a year after it expires.

After holding the intermediate license for 180 days and completing the required driver education course (see Driver Education Training section), the driver will be eligible for a full unrestricted license.

It typically takes 10-15 business days​ for the U.S. Postal Service to deliver a credential. If you have not received your credential in 30 days, please contact us.

Is Kentucky a stop and ID state? ›

Because Kentucky does not have a “stop and identify” law, if a person refuses to provide identification to the police upon request — even if he or she is suspected of engaging in criminal activity — then that person cannot be arrested and prosecuted for failing to provide identification.

​After holding the permit for 180 days, you may schedule an appointment with the Kentucky State Police to take the road skills test to apply for your full-unrestricted license. A licensed driver 21 years or older must accompany you to the testing site.

That said, it's not a bad idea to get a REAL ID, so you don't need to use your passport for domestic travel. Instead, you can keep it safe at home.
